Windows 11 Launch

On October 5th 2021 Microsoft launched Windows 11 as a free upgrade to Windows 10.

 

When will you be able to get Windows 11?

Windows 11 will continue rolling out through mid-2022. The newer your device is, the sooner you’re likely to have access to the update. The older your PC is, the longer you’ll probably have to wait.

 

Initial Feedback

It has been just over 2 months and I have receive some initial feedback from LightScribe users who have ‘upgraded’ to Windows 11 and their experience with trying to get LightScribe to work on Microsoft’s latest offering.

 

The Good…

Things have not got worse.

Please do take this lightly. Compared to Apple, Microsoft has not stopped older software (32 bit) the ability to install and run on Windows 11. Apple’s last two Mac OS versions Big Sur and Monterey will not allow 32 bit software to install – Thankfully Microsoft has not gone down that route with Windows 11.

Just in case you did not know, the reason this is critical for LightScribe is that the LightScribe System Software is 32 bit software so no matter what Labeling software you use, you need this to install for LightScribe to work. Additionally, all the Free Labeling Software is 32 bit as well.

 

The Bad…

Things have not got better.

To summarize the initial feedback I have received, Installing LightScribe Software is no easier on Windows 11 than it was on 8.1 or 10.

The solution to installing the System Software, namely, using Windows 7 or 8.0 compatibility settings still works for most people when installing on Windows 11.

However you will still need to use the methods shown in these videos to install and use the Free LightScribe Software.

 

Further Updates

I will continue to monitor all the feedback I get, and will post additional information on how Windows 11 is shaping up with LightScribe in the coming months.

This is just a quick update on what HP has finally done regarding LightScribe.com.

It seems as I suspected that there were no takers for the LightScribe.com domain name, so HP have simply redirected it to their HP.com homepage.

What’s This About?

Firstly, HP have no intention of re-establishing LightScribe.com as a LightScribe support website.

However if you are interested in the LightScribe.com domain name you can contact ddna.com who are acting on HP’s behalf.

.

Implications For LightScribe Users

Now at first glance this may seem unimportent, and from a purley LightScribe functional sense it is.

However, that’s not the only consideration here.

Every time you open up the LightScribe System Software Control Panel go to the Services Tab you will see this:

All the Go buttons and obviously the lightscribe.com link go to… you guessed it, the redirect splash page.

So here is what is happening.

Everybody who has installed the LightScribe System Software and who want extra information on LightScribe, click on a button or the link and land on the splash page, and as you can guess, they are somewhat confused, to put it mildly. Instead of getting to a live working support site they see that.

PLEASE NOTE:

In addition to that, any live link on the web that still points to ANY page on LightScribe.com, and there must be 100s if not 1000s, will also take people to this redirect page as well.

 

The Good News

I have been in communication with DDNA and they more than happy to forward all the enquiries they get, that are LightScribe support related, to me.

That way anybody who needs help with LightScribe can still get it.

I won’t say this is an ideal solution but under the circumstances it’s better than folks just being left in the dark. Many of the emails do start with ‘what’s happening’ or “is LightScribe dead’ which is understandable because this is not the sort of page these folks expected to land on.

 

In Conclusion

I have written this post to alert you to the situation. However, you may have landed on that page and wondered what was going on yourself.

Also to inform the LightScribe community what is happening and NOT to use any of the links in any of the FREE LightScribe Software.

Over the last few months two things have happened that have made LightScribe a little more ‘challenging’… They are the availability of LightScribe CD/DVD Media and LightScribe Enabled DVD Drives.

In this post I want to address the first question and I will update this post as I get new information so it is always current.

LightScribe DVD & CD Availability

I receive on a daily basis questions from fellow Scribers (and those who want to start using LightScribe) about the availability and increasing cost of LightScribe CDs and DVDs.

.

LightScribe ‘Not Available in Stores’

I think you will struggle to find any LightScribe discs in any stores anywhere in the world. I have not seen any in the UK for a couple of years now, Maplin was the last here.

However, all is not lost… Your first port of call should now be:

Amazon.com and eBay.com

.

Now it stands to reason that if you are not in The States then use your own local versions of these sites. Because I’m in the UK I always use the .co.uk sites…

.

When on the sites do a search for the following terms:

LightScribe DVD+R

LightScribe DVD-R

LightScribe CD-r

For example on eBay.com I did the search ‘LightScribe CD-r’ and this resulted in this:

This search was done today, 27th January 2016.

What you find will be different if you search on another day… 🙂

LightScribe DVD & CD Are Still Available

The point I want to make is this, you can still get the discs, albeit, not in a local store anymore.

.

Please Help

I want to help as many people as possible continue to use and enjoy LightScribe for years to come…

So if you know of anywhere else you can get discs reliably, please let me know and I will post the information here.
